Solar batteries: prices, capacities and which one you need

A battery turns the surplus you currently export to the grid into energy you use at night. We explain what capacity your real consumption needs, what each option costs installed, and how it is legalised in Andalusia. Free quote within 24 hours from your electricity bill.

Benefits of home batteries in Málaga

  • LFP lithium storage: the safest chemistry with the most cycles
  • Installed systems from 5 to 20 kWh; for apartments without solar panels there is PowerHub ONE (plug-in, from €1,199)
  • Retrofit onto an existing system, often without replacing the inverter
  • Blackout backup: fridge, lights, WiFi and pool pump keep running
  • Use off-peak tariffs: charge cheaply at night, self-consume by day
  • RD 244/2019 legalisation plus IBI and IRPF paperwork included

Home batteries in Málaga, what to know

Going off grid with solar in Spain starts with the battery, so if you are asking how to go off grid with solar power on a finca, a cortijo or a rural plot without a grid connection, the storage capacity and the inverter decide everything. An off grid solar system replaces the grid instead of supplementing it: a hybrid inverter, 15–40 kWh of LFP storage, an automatic transfer switch (ATS) and an EPS backup output so the house keeps running when there is no grid at all. Our own reference project in Loja combines 28 Aiko 610 W panels, a 15 kW Deye hybrid inverter and 32 kWh of MTS storage with ATS and EPS. Off grid solar kits sold online rarely survive a Spanish summer with air conditioning and a pool pump, which is why we size on measured consumption and install with our own crew; prices, battery sizes and the full off grid vs on grid comparison are on our off-grid solar installation page. Solar batteries solve the basic mismatch of self-consumption: panels produce at midday while the home consumes in the morning and at night. Without storage, a typical household self-consumes 30–40% of what it generates and exports the rest to the grid, where it is compensated far below the price you pay to buy it back. With a correctly sized battery, self-consumption rises to 80–95%. The capacity you need depends on your night-time consumption, not on the size of your array: the practical rule is to cover what you use between sunset and sunrise. For a two-person household that is usually 5 kWh; for a family with air conditioning, a pool or an electric car, 10–15 kWh; for villas with permanent climate control, 15–20 kWh. Oversizing is the most expensive and most common mistake, because capacity that is never discharged never pays for itself. On price, we work with three ranges installed by our own technicians, always with a hybrid inverter where the system requires it. Pylontech offers the best value in conventional rack storage. Deye stands out where the system uses a hybrid inverter, because integration is native. Enphase is the choice for premium installations where safety and a long warranty come first. No solar panels and no way to install them, as in many apartments? Then you do not need an installed system but a plug-in battery: PowerHub ONE, our own brand, connects to a normal 230 V socket from €1,199 incl. VAT and works on punta/valle arbitrage. It is a different product, designed for apartments and smaller households, this page is about the installed systems. Every battery we install uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP), the chemistry that does not go into thermal runaway and that withstands thousands of full cycles. If you already have panels, in most cases storage can be added as an AC-coupled retrofit without replacing the existing inverter. Where the inverter is an older string model, swapping it for a hybrid often pays off because it also unlocks blackout backup, particularly valued in the rural inland areas of Málaga where grid failures are common. Installation is legalised under RD 244/2019 and we handle the amendment to your self-consumption file, the municipal IBI reduction and the IRPF energy-efficiency deduction. To size your system we only need your electricity bill with hourly detail and, if you already have solar, the production data from your monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on capacity and installation type. Our plug-in PowerHub ONE starts at €1,199 including VAT for 2.4 kWh and reaches €3,499 at 12 kWh. A conventional 5 kWh rack battery installed is around €3,500; 10 kWh systems with Pylontech, Deye or Enphase run €5,500–€7,900, and 15–20 kWh villa systems €9,000–€14,000. The final price varies depending on whether the inverter must be replaced and on the cable run to the consumer unit.

Capacity is calculated from night-time consumption, not from installed panel power. As a guide: a couple typically needs about 5 kWh, a family with air conditioning or a pool 10–15 kWh, and a villa with continuous climate control 15–20 kWh. Using your hourly bill we calculate exactly how many kWh you consume outside daylight hours and size on that figure, because capacity that is never discharged never pays for itself.

In most cases yes, via an AC-coupled retrofit without replacing the existing inverter. We first check the inverter model, your contracted power and the space available in the consumer unit. Where the inverter is an older string model, swapping it for a hybrid sometimes pays off because it also unlocks blackout backup.

Only if the system includes a hybrid inverter with a backup port and an essential-circuits board. In that configuration the fridge, lights, WiFi and pool pump keep running for 8 to 24 hours depending on capacity. A battery connected without a backup port disconnects for safety when the grid fails, as regulations require.

Ten years on Pylontech and Deye, fifteen on Enphase IQ. PowerHub ONE carries a ten-year or 6,000-cycle warranty retaining at least 70% capacity. All warranties are backed by Mi Techo Solar SL together with the manufacturer's Spanish office, so claims are resolved locally.

Yes, but it is a different system. A true off grid solar system needs a hybrid inverter, 15–40 kWh of battery storage, an automatic transfer switch (ATS) and an EPS backup output, so the house runs without any grid connection at all. That is what we build on fincas, cortijos and rural plots with no grid or a very weak one inland from Málaga, around Granada and in Loja, where our reference off grid installation runs 28 panels, a 15 kW Deye hybrid inverter and 32 kWh of MTS storage. Off grid solar kits bought online are usually undersized for air conditioning, a borehole pump and a pool. Prices from €16,000 for a permanent home up to €45,000 for a fully self-sufficient property, battery sizes and the off grid versus hybrid comparison are set out on our off-grid solar installation page.

Yes. Adding storage modifies your self-consumption file and must be notified under RD 244/2019, with its electrical installation certificate. We handle the full submission to the Junta de Andalucía and the distributor, plus the IBI reduction and the IRPF deduction where applicable. For off-grid systems we wrote a complete RD 244/2019 legalisation guide covering ATS, EPS and batteries.

What customers in Málaga and the surrounding area say

Solar panel batteries by municipality in Málaga and the Costa del Sol

The capacity that suits you depends on the municipality: an apartment in Málaga city does not consume like a villa with a pool in Marbella or a finca on a weak grid in the Guadalhorce valley. These are the capacities we typically install per area, with our own crew and legalisation included.

Málaga

Málaga city is mostly apartments and collective self-consumption: storage is sized per home on night-time consumption, not on the shared roof.

Typical capacity: 5 – 10 kWh

Installed price: 3.500 – 7.900 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Málaga

Marbella

Marbella is mostly villas with permanent climate control, a pool and an EV, so storage sits at the higher capacities and nearly always with a hybrid inverter.

Typical capacity: 10 – 20 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 14.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Marbella

Estepona

In Estepona consumption peaks in the evening through air conditioning and the pool pump: exactly the profile where a 10–15 kWh battery pays back fastest.

Typical capacity: 10 – 15 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 11.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Estepona

Fuengirola

In Fuengirola we mostly work on penthouses and communal roofs, where consumer-unit space decides: we choose compact rack formats.

Typical capacity: 5 – 10 kWh

Installed price: 3.500 – 7.900 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Fuengirola

Mijas

In Mijas most jobs are retrofits onto existing panels: AC-coupled storage added without touching the existing inverter.

Typical capacity: 10 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 7.900 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Mijas

Benalmádena

Benalmádena mixes old town, coast and hillside urbanisations; roof orientation varies a lot and with it the battery's charging curve.

Typical capacity: 5 – 15 kWh

Installed price: 3.500 – 11.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Benalmádena

Coín

In Coín and the Guadalhorce valley grid outages are fairly common, so most systems are built with a hybrid inverter and EPS backup.

Typical capacity: 10 – 20 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 14.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Coín

Alhaurín el Grande

In Alhaurín el Grande we install with an essential-circuits board: fridge, lights, WiFi and borehole pump keep running when the grid fails.

Typical capacity: 15 kWh

Installed price: 9.000 – 11.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Alhaurín el Grande

Torre del Mar

Torre del Mar and the Axarquía are largely second homes: the battery is programmed for peak/off-peak arbitrage even when the house is empty.

Typical capacity: 5 – 10 kWh

Installed price: 3.500 – 7.900 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Torre del Mar

Nerja

In Nerja many homes have little usable roof space: there storage delivers more saving than adding extra panels.

Typical capacity: 10 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 7.900 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Nerja

Torremolinos

In Torremolinos we work a lot with communities and small hotels, where storage is sized on the whole building's load curve.

Typical capacity: 10 – 20 kWh

Installed price: 5.500 – 14.000 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Torremolinos

Pizarra

Around Pizarra, Cártama and Álora there are many fincas with a weak grid or none at all: capacities go up and an automatic transfer switch (ATS) is fitted.

Typical capacity: 15 – 32 kWh

Installed price: 9.000 – 32.500 € (incl. VAT and legalisation)

Solar panel batteries in Pizarra

Solar panel batteries by municipality
