Why solar systems lose performance

A solar installation is not maintenance-free. Over the years, small issues quietly erode your yield, and you only notice on the electricity bill. Regular maintenance improves safety, performance and the lifespan of your system.

  • Dirt & dust

Saharan dust, pollen and salt air can cut output by up to 25%.

  • Software issues

Outdated inverter firmware silently limits production and features.

  • Loose connections

Thermal cycling loosens DC connectors, a real fire and yield risk.

  • Inverter warnings

Error codes often go unnoticed for months, costing hundreds of euros.

  • Battery issues

Degrading cells and wrong charge settings shorten battery life.

  • No monitoring

Without monitoring, a failed string can go undetected all season.

How to clean solar panels properly

Cleaning solar panels is not the same as hosing down a window. The glass carries an anti-reflective coating and the aluminium frame has seals that pressure, harsh chemicals or thermal shock will damage. Here is the method we use, and the one to follow yourself if your roof is genuinely safe to walk on.

Mi Techo Solar technician cleaning solar panels on a roof on the Costa del Sol
  1. 1

    Pick the right moment

Early morning or late evening, with cold glass. On a panel sitting at 60 °C the water evaporates instantly and leaves limescale rings that cost you more output than the dust did.

  2. 2

    Remove the dry dust first

A soft brush or telescopic duster lifts loose Saharan dust. Scrubbing with water before the sand is off scratches the glass, calima dust is abrasive.

  3. 3

    Use clean, low-mineral water

Demineralised or osmosis water at normal hose pressure. Costa del Sol tap water is hard and leaves calcium deposits that bond to the glass and attract more dirt.

  4. 4

    Soft brush, horizontal strokes

Microfibre brush or a non-abrasive sponge, working along the frame. Never scrapers, scouring pads or metal brushes.

  5. 5

    Rinse and air-dry

Rinse top to bottom and let the panels dry on their own. With soft water there is no need to towel off.

  6. 6

    Check the yield afterwards

Compare the next day's production curve in your monitoring app against the days before. No improvement means dirt was never the issue, usually a dropped string, a failed optimiser or an inverter throttling on heat.

What you need to clean solar panels

  • Microfibre brush on a telescopic pole (never stiff bristles or metal).
  • Demineralised or osmosis water; with tap water, always rinse and never let it dry in the sun.
  • A hose at normal tap pressure, no lance, no pressure washer.
  • Gloves, non-slip footwear and, on any pitch or height, a safety line or scaffold tower.
  • Your monitoring app open, so you can compare output before and after.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

On the Costa del Sol the rule of thumb is twice a year, but it depends heavily on where the array sits. After a heavy calima episode, bring the clean forward: dried Saharan mud left by dust-laden rain is what really costs you output.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?
Installation settingRecommended frequency
Inland home, no building work nearby1–2 times a year
Within 2 km of the sea (salt air)Twice a year
Next to fields, construction or a dusty roadThree times a year
After a calima followed by rainOne extra clean

What never to do

  • Pressure washers: they blow out the frame seals and void the manufacturer's warranty.
  • Detergent, bleach, solvents or ammonia glass cleaner: they attack the anti-reflective coating.
  • Cleaning at midday on hot glass: thermal shock causes microcracks.
  • Standing on the panels to reach the back row: invisible microcracks that show up in your production data.
  • Hard, calcium-rich tap water drying in the sun: it bakes a limescale film onto the glass that holds more dirt, the most common reason a DIY clean lowers output.
  • Cleaning in full midday summer sun: on top of thermal shock, the water evaporates before you can rinse and leaves rings.
  • Relying on rain to do the job: rain here usually falls through suspended dust and leaves the glass dirtier than before.
  • Limescale removers or car polish: they leave a film and change how the glass handles light.

If the roof is pitched, over three metres high, or you would have to stand on the panels, don't. Most domestic solar accidents here are falls during cleaning, not electrical faults.

Why panels get dirty so fast on the Costa del Sol

This coast combines three things almost nowhere else in Europe has at once: Saharan dust, salt air and months without rain. The same installation soils far faster in Málaga than it would in northern Spain.

  • Calima (Saharan dust)

During a calima episode an easterly wind carries fine Sahara particles onto the glass. Add a light shower and it bakes into a film of dried mud that will not wash off. This is what triggers the sudden 'my panels look filthy' calls we get overnight.

  • Salt spray and sea breeze

Within two kilometres of the coast, marine aerosol leaves a salt layer that grabs and holds dust. It also accelerates corrosion on mounting rails and bolts, something we inspect on every visit.

  • Pollen, building work and drought

Spring pollen, construction dust in developing areas, and up to six months without useful rain. Rain here rarely cleans anything: it arrives loaded with suspended dust and often leaves the glass worse than before.

  • Bird droppings and leaves

A single opaque spot on one cell can trigger the bypass diode and switch off an entire section of the panel, and creates hotspots that permanently damage the module.

Solar panel cleaning & maintenance, what it costs

Real prices, no 'contact us for a quote'. All amounts are for installations up to ten panels with safe roof access; above ten panels the per-panel surcharge shown applies.

Why maintenance here isn't optional

At around 1,750 kWh/kWp a year, the Costa del Sol out-produces almost anywhere in Europe, and soils faster too. Every percentage point lost to dirt is money you never recover over the life of the system.

  • Calima: Saharan dust bonds with the first light rain and dries into a mud film that will not wash off by itself.
  • Salt air: within 2 km of the sea, marine aerosol traps dust and speeds up corrosion on rails and bolts.
  • Drought: up to six months without useful rain, so soiling stacks up season after season.
  • Real losses: 15% soiling on a 5 kWp home system is roughly 1,300 kWh a year.
