Solar panel maintenance tips and schedule: cost, checklist and how often (Spain 2026)

14 September 2026 6 min read

On the Costa del Sol a solar system without maintenance loses 10 to 25% of its output within a few years. Not through dramatic failures, but through Saharan dust, salt, pollen and small faults nobody checks. This guide collects what we see every week on roofs in Málaga, Marbella and the Axarquía: what needs doing, how often, and what it costs.

Why maintenance is not optional here

Three local factors stack up that simply do not exist in northern Europe:

  • Calima. Saharan dust settles in thin layers. If light rain follows, it bakes onto the glass as a mud film that never washes off by itself.
  • Salt. Within two kilometres of the coast, salt attacks mounting structures, bolts and connectors.
  • Heat. A badly ventilated inverter derates in summer, exactly during peak production hours.
  • The typical result: a 5 kWp system that should produce around 8.750 kWh a year settles at 7.400 kWh without the owner noticing, because the curve in the app drops gradually.

    What proper maintenance includes

  • Visual inspection of panels, mounting structure and fixings.
  • Professional cleaning with demineralised water and a soft brush, never a pressure washer.
  • Inverter check: error codes, ventilation, settings and firmware.
  • Battery check: cell health, temperature, charge and discharge curves.
  • DC and AC safety: MC4 connectors, protections, earthing, insulation.
  • Production analysis against the theoretical forecast and previous years.
  • Digital report with photos, measurements and recommendations.
  • If a maintenance quote leaves out points 5 and 6, it is a cleaning job, not maintenance.

How often should panels be cleaned?

  • Once a year as a rule inland (Coín, Alhaurín, Antequera, Ronda).
  • Twice a year on the seafront, under trees, near building works or farmland.
  • Ad hoc after a heavy calima episode, especially if rain followed.
  • A trick to decide without climbing up: check the daily peak in your monitoring app. If on a clear day the peak stays clearly below comparable weeks earlier, the glass is the reason.

What solar panel maintenance costs in 2026

Real prices we apply across Málaga province:

    ServiceExcl. VATIncl. VAT
    One-off Care Check (up to 10 panels, safe access)150 €181,50 €
    Each extra panel above 10from 6 €from 7,26 €
Care Plan with annual visit includedfrom 15 €/monthfrom 18,15 €/month
Monitoring added to an older systemfrom 120 €from 145,20 €

Difficult-access roofs, commercial buildings and communities of owners are quoted per installation, always at a fixed price before we start. See the full breakdown on Mi Techo Care and compare it with other line items on our itemised quotes page.

    Does it pay for itself?

Yes, usually in the first year. Recovering 15% of output on a 5 kWp system is about 1.300 kWh, worth 230 to 320 € a year at current tariffs, against a cost of 150 to 180 €. On top of that come the faults caught before they turn into weeks of lost production.

Five tips you can apply today

  • Check the app monthly and note the peak of a clear day.
  • Never stand on the panels: it causes invisible microcracks that do show up in production.
  • Skip ammonia glass cleaner and detergent; they leave a film that attracts more dirt.
  • Clean early, on cold glass: cold water on hot glass can crack it.
  • Keep every inspection report: it is what lets you claim the manufacturer warranty.
  • FAQ

Can I clean the panels myself?

Yes, if the roof is safely accessible, using a soft brush and demineralised water early in the day. If the roof is pitched or over three metres high, the risk is not worth it.

Do you maintain systems installed by other companies?

Yes. A large share of our maintenance customers have systems from third parties or from installers that no longer exist. We start with a Care Check and then advise on the right plan.

Does anything need installing to start a contract?

Usually nothing. Only if the system has no remote monitoring do we add a dongle or gateway from 120 € excl. VAT, during the same visit.

How quickly do you come out if production stops?

With a Care Plan, priority response within 48 working hours between Málaga, Marbella, Estepona and the Axarquía, plus same-day remote diagnosis.

    Does maintenance affect the warranty?

The opposite: most manufacturers require documented inspections. Our digital report serves as proof.

    Where we work

Our team is based in Coín and covers the whole province. Check your area on solar panels Málaga, Marbella or Estepona, and arrange maintenance through Mi Techo Care.

    Solar panel maintenance checklist

Use this checklist once a year, or twice a year within two kilometres of the coast:

  • Solar panel cleaning with demineralised water and a soft brush (never a pressure washer)
  • Visual check of glass, frames and mounting bolts for corrosion
  • Inverter reading, error log and ventilation check
  • String and optimiser output compared panel by panel
  • Cable glands, connectors and earthing checked
  • Before/after output reading with a photo report
  • How often should you clean solar panels?

On the Costa del Sol once a year is the minimum, twice a year after a heavy calima season or near the sea. In northern Europe rain does most of the work; here it does not.

What does solar panel maintenance cost?

Our solar panel cleaning service starts at 150 EUR excluding VAT for a standard domestic roof, with larger systems and difficult access quoted per job. A full maintenance visit including inverter check and output report is quoted on the same basis.

What is the best way to clean solar panels?

Demineralised water at low pressure with a soft brush, early in the morning while the glass is cool. Detergents, hard water and pressure washers cause microcracks and limescale marks, and they can void the panel warranty.

Solar panel maintenance tips and schedule

A simple solar panel maintenance schedule for southern Spain:

  • Every month: check the app or portal for a production drop against the same month last year.
  • Every three months: look at the array from the ground for shade, leaves, bird mess or a panel that stands out.
  • Once a year (March to June): full solar panel cleaning with demineralised water, plus inverter, string and mounting check.
  • Twice a year: within two kilometres of the sea, under pines or palms, and after a heavy calima season.
  • Every five years: torque check on mounting bolts, connector and earthing inspection, inverter fan and filter service.
  • The same schedule applies whether you call it PV panel maintenance, photovoltaic panels maintenance or solar module maintenance: same glass, same inverter, same checks.
