Photovoltaic pergola: power, yield and self-consumption

A photovoltaic pergola is a free-standing structure whose roof is made of solar panels. Same shade as a normal pergola, but every square metre also feeds your self-consumption, your battery and your EV charger.

  • 3 kWp to 15 kWp on a single pergola
  • Around 1,750 kWh per kWp per year in the province of Malaga
  • Glass-glass panels for filtered light, full-black for maximum output
  • Hybrid inverter, ready for battery and EV charger
  • Self-consumption registration and surplus compensation arranged by us
  • Production monitoring in one app, together with your roof panels

How much power fits on a photovoltaic pergola

As a rule of thumb every 2 square metres of pergola roof carries one panel of 450 to 550 Wp. A 4 x 6 metre pergola therefore holds about 12 panels, roughly 5 to 6 kWp. A 4 x 9 metre structure reaches 8 to 9 kWp and a double pergola over a terrace plus parking bay comfortably passes 12 kWp. We calculate the exact figure from your surface, the orientation and the slope during the free site visit.

Yield of a photovoltaic pergola in Malaga

In the province of Malaga a well-oriented installation produces around 1,750 kWh per installed kWp per year. A 5 kWp photovoltaic pergola therefore generates about 8,750 kWh, and a 9 kWp structure close to 15,750 kWh. Production peaks between May and September, exactly when air conditioning and the pool pump run hardest, which is why the self-consumption share of a pergola is usually higher than that of a roof installation.

Glass-glass or full-black panels

Glass-glass panels have a transparent back sheet and let filtered light through, so the terrace underneath stays bright and the structure looks like a designed roof rather than a technical installation. Full-black panels are opaque, give complete shade and about 5 to 10 percent more output per square metre. Both carry a 25-year product and yield warranty; the choice is a trade-off between light underneath and kWh on the meter.

Inverter, battery and EV charger

We fit a hybrid inverter as standard, so the pergola can be extended with a battery of 5 to 15 kWh later without replacing anything. Surplus production charges the battery first, then feeds the EV charger, and only the remainder goes to the grid under the surplus compensation scheme. If you already have panels on the roof, the pergola is added to the same inverter or the same app wherever the electrical layout allows it.

Price of a photovoltaic pergola

A 4 x 6 metre photovoltaic pergola of about 5 kWp lands between 7,500 and 12,500 EUR turnkey, including structure, panels, inverter, cabling, installation and paperwork. Wood is the cheapest structure for small spans, aluminium is the default on the coast, steel costs 10 to 20 percent more and buys you a wider open span. A battery adds roughly 3,500 to 7,000 EUR depending on capacity.

Permits, self-consumption registration and subsidies

Most towns in Malaga require a declaracion responsable or a minor-works licence for a pergola. Mi Techo Solar prepares the structural calculation, the technical drawings and the municipal file, registers the installation for self-consumption and surplus compensation, and applies for the IBI or ICIO reduction where the town hall offers one. In a community of owners the structure normally needs a vote at the general meeting; we supply the documentation for that meeting.

Photovoltaic pergola, solar pergola or solar carport

Pergola fotovoltaica and pergola solar describe the same product; the first term simply emphasises the electrical side. A marquesina solar is the version designed to cover vehicles. If your priority is shade over a terrace or pool, start at our solar pergola page; if it is covering cars, look at the solar carport and marquesina pages. All three share the same panels, inverters, warranty and installation team.

Photovoltaic pergola: price, capacity and made-to-measure solar canopies

A photovoltaic pergola uses the solar panels themselves as the roof: 3 to 10 kWp depending on the surface, feeding the house, pool, air conditioning or EV charger. We install them in Málaga, Marbella, Estepona, Mijas and Fuengirola, both in new builds and on existing terraces.

Price is calculated per square metre and per installed capacity, including structural calculation, anchoring, hidden cabling, inverter, monitoring and legalisation. We also build solar canopies and louvred versions where the community or town hall requires a specific profile.
