An aerothermal system extracts heat from outdoor air through a heat pump and transfers it into the home, or the reverse in summer. Its advantage over an electric radiator or a boiler is that it does not create heat by burning something, it moves heat, which is why it delivers three to five times the electrical energy it consumes. That factor is the COP, and Málaga's climate is particularly favourable for it: winters are mild and coastal temperatures rarely fall below five degrees, so the pump almost always works in its optimal range, unlike inland Spain. On installed pricing, two things should be separated. A conventional split unit of around 3.5 kW for one room typically costs €900–€1,400 installed, depending on the distance between indoor and outdoor units and the complexity of the pipe run. A multi-split system for three or four rooms rises to €2,800–€4,500. These ranges are indicative: the final quote always comes from a site visit, because real cost depends on the state of the electrical installation, the contracted power and the drainage point. Combining it with solar is where aerothermal changes category. It is a substantial electrical load and, in cooling mode, a very daytime one, exactly when panels peak. In a Costa del Sol home with solar, summer air conditioning is largely covered by your own production, so the marginal cost of cooling approaches zero during midday hours. In winter the balance is less favourable because demand concentrates early morning and at dusk, and that is where a battery provides the load shifting needed. Finally, replacing gas, oil or electric radiators with an aerothermal system reduces non-renewable primary energy consumption, precisely the figure used to calculate the energy certificate, and qualifies for the IRPF energy-efficiency deductions.
