Heating your pool with solar energy: which system to choose and what it costs in 2026

13 September 2026 3 min read

Having a pool on the Costa del Sol is a luxury… until the heating bill arrives. A conventional heat pump can use 1,200–2,500 € a year in electricity for an 8×4 m pool. With solar energy, that cost drops to almost zero. Here are the real options we install and what they cost.

Three ways to heat a pool with the sun

1. Heat pump powered by solar panels (the most popular choice)

A pool heat pump draws between 1.5 and 3 kW while running. With a well-sized solar panel system, the sun covers that consumption during the day — exactly when the pump works. It is the combination we install most in villas in Marbella, Estepona and Mijas: the pool stays at 28–30 °C from April to October with barely any electricity cost.

2. Solar thermal collectors

Dedicated panels that heat the pool water directly. Cheap and efficient in summer, but they take up a lot of roof space and are of little use outside the swimming season. Today we only recommend them in very specific cases.

3. Aerothermal heating for pools

Aerothermal heating is technically a high-efficiency heat pump: for every kWh of electricity it delivers 4–5 kWh of heat. Combined with solar panels, it extends the swimming season even into the cold months at minimal cost.

What it costs (real prices from our installations)

  • Heat pump for an 8×4 m pool, installed: from 2,900 € VAT included
  • Solar panel extension to cover the pump (2–3 kWp extra): from 2,800 €
  • Complete system for a villa with a year-round heated pool: between 5,500 € and 9,000 € depending on size

The most common mistake: ignoring sunshine hours

The pool heat pump works mostly at midday and in the afternoon. If your panels produce more than you consume in those hours, the surplus flows to the grid at a low price. Two solutions:

  • Schedule the pump during peak production hours — free, and the first thing we set up.
  • Add a battery to store the surplus. An installed 10 kWh battery costs between 5,500 € and 7,900 € and raises self-consumption from 40% to 80%. All details and prices in our guide to batteries for solar panels.
  • Real case: villa in Marbella

Client with a 10×5 m pool, 2.5 kW heat pump and a bill of about 1,800 €/year just for the pool. We installed 3 kWp of additional panels and rescheduled the pump to sunshine hours. Result: pool costs reduced to under 200 €/year and payback in just over 3 years.

    How much could you save?

Every pool is different: size, orientation, months of use. Request your free study and we will tell you with numbers which combination fits your home, with a fixed price within 24 hours. And if you already have panels, see how a battery can capture the surplus you are losing today.
