Surplus compensation: how much it really cuts from your bill

17 September 2026 3 min read

Self-consumption does not pay you the same price for exported energy as you pay to import it. Understanding that gap is what separates a profitable system from an oversized one.

How the mechanism works

Under RD 244/2019, exported energy is credited within the same billing period. The credit can never exceed the cost of the energy you consumed that month — the balance cannot go negative or roll over.

What that means in practice

  • High-production summer months usually leave uncompensated surplus.
  • So the goal is not to produce more, but to consume more of what you produce: water heater, air conditioning, pool and car during sun hours.
  • When uncompensated surplus is high every month, storage pays: see solar batteries.

What to check before signing

Export prices differ a lot per supplier, and the compensation contract is filed together with the installation dossier. Step by step in our legalisation guide.
