High in the olive hills above Loja stands a finca where the grid was never a comfortable option: far away, expensive to connect and unreliable. The owners wanted the opposite — to run the house on their own sun and move towards full energy independence. This is the project we built for them, step by step, with our own photos.
The starting point: a finca without a reliable grid
The house sits among olive trees, with the borehole, water pumps, kitchen, air conditioning and lighting all depending on a supply that failed exactly when it was needed most. A shop-bought kit would not solve that: it needed a custom design with enough summer power and real storage for the night.
What we installed
- 28 x Aiko 610 W panels on a custom galvanised ground frame, at the optimal angle and clear of the olive trees.
- Deye 15 kW single-phase hybrid inverter, sized for pump and air-conditioning start-up loads.
- 32 kWh of MTS battery storage, our own system, expandable later.
- ATS and EPS: automatic transfer and emergency power so the house keeps running during an outage.
- Full groundworks: levelling, excavation, formwork and concrete foundations.
- 80 m cable run from the solar field to the technical area.
The build, from footing to first kilowatt
We started literally with the ground: levelling the platform, digging the footings and pouring the concrete foundations. On top came the galvanised frame, the 28 panels and the 80-metre cable run to the plant room next to the water tanks, where the Deye inverter, the MTS battery bank and the ATS/EPS boards were installed.
The result for the customer
The house runs on its own energy during the day and on the battery at night. What the owners notice most is what you cannot see: if anything drops out, the system switches over by itself and nothing even blinks. No generator in the background, no connection bills, and room to grow.
What does a project like this cost?
All in — groundworks, concrete, frame, panels, battery, inverter, 80 m cable run, ATS, EPS, materials, delivery and installation — this project sits between 27,500 € and 32,500 €. At the customer's request we name only the location, Loja, not their name.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an off-grid solar installation for a finca cost?
A small system starts around 8,500 €; a complete home is typically 16,000 € to 26,000 €, and a self-sufficiency system like Loja, including groundworks, 27,500 € to 32,500 €.
What are ATS and EPS, and why do I need them?
The ATS switches automatically between energy sources and the EPS keeps essential circuits powered when something fails. Together they keep the house running with no manual intervention.
Is a solar kit or a custom off-grid installation better?
A kit is fine for a shed or a pump. A home with pumps, air conditioning and night-time consumption needs a custom design: a properly sized inverter, enough storage and local service.
Can the battery be expanded later?
Yes. The MTS system is built to scale beyond the current 32 kWh without replacing the inverter.
